Building Codes Renovated
City Council updates construction regulations but permit and inspection fees will remain the same.

The Knoxville City Council updated the city’s codes for all residential and commercial construction on Tuesday in a series of unanimous votes.
Revised building codes take effect on Jan. 1.
Peter Ahrens, director of the city’s Plans Review and Inspections Office, said the changes -- adopting the newest versions of various international codes -- were necessary to comply with state regulations.
The updates cover the building, fire, swimming pool and spa, property maintenance, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, fuel gas, existing building, energy conservation, and residential one- and two- family dwellings codes.
