Compass wants writers! Knoxville's home for independent news is looking for both freelance feature contributors and local columnists. See below for details on both:

FEATURE CONTRIBUTORS

We are always open to reporters and writers with journalistic experience interested in helping us tell stories about Knoxville. Just drop us an email at info@compassknox.com with a resume, a few writing samples, and any particular areas of interest or expertise. Our average story length is 750-1,200 words.

LOCAL COLUMNISTS

We are seeking a diversity of local voices to present personal thoughts and reflections on the news and life in East Tennessee. Politics can be part of that mix, but we are only interested in local and Tennessee issues — we are not looking for pontificators on national or global issues, except insomuch as they have specific local resonance.

Column topics could vary widely: business, science, the environment and nature, art and culture, education, faith, family, lifestyle, anything specific to the experience of living in Knoxville and Knox County in the 2020s. Column length should be 750-900 words. We are particularly looking for strong writers with distinctive voices. You can send an email to info@compassknox.com with a resume, writing samples, and any particular areas of interest or expertise.

COMPENSATION

Any submissions accepted will be paid. We can't afford big-media freelance rates, but we will do our best to make it worth your while. Email us for more information.
