Knox County’s first-ever early retirement offer for teachers may create a new classroom workforce: part-time retirees.

Under an early retirement offer approved this month by the Knox County school board and County Commission, 688 school employees are potentially eligible for a package that would pay their health insurance premiums for up to 14 years.
The school system hopes to at least $2.5 million as veteran teachers choose to leave.
