Buyouts Looming at the News Sentinel

Editor Jack McElroy and cartoonist Charlie Daniel are among the veteran journalists who qualify for Gannett's separation offer.

News Sentinel Editor Jack McElroy, iconic cartoonist Charlie Daniel and at least eight other journalists at Knoxville’s daily newspaper have been offered buyouts, according to sources and documents.
The buyouts are available for the daily paper's most experienced and decorated journalists.
Gannett, the News Sentinel’s parent company, made the offers last week. According to documents obtained by Compass, the buyout offers went to the oldest newsroom employees who have the most experience and institutional knowledge at the paper.
It’s unclear at this point how many journalists will take up Gannett’s offer. They have until Dec. 13 to make...
